At the end of January this year, Ashley Lim came up with the idea of creating works beyond fashion and art and was planning the fashion show and exhibition in April. It was a tight schedule for the creation and production but I gladly joined in the part of the creation as a photo media artist with the love of the idea. Sweeping away this worry about tight schedule, she executed the project with great drive with the help of a wonderful voluntary team.
7 artists and 7 young fashion designers teamed up for the collaboration. I liked Alexandra Malpass‘s ‘Rust’ collection which she experimented on fabrics with variations of nature. And she was inspired by my work ‘Cabinet of curiosities of identity‘ which exploredmy main theme ‘identity’ with the body casting and an old photographic print process, ‘Gum bichromate’. So our work ‘Aleatory’ had been created. And the dancer Charlotte Davies presented this garment with beautiful movement at the opening. Anna Healey’s choreograph connected 7 garments in one line, presenting each unique piece at the same time and harmonized with the elegant setting design by USYD masters of architecture students along with Payam Khalili’s powerful music.
I hope this chance would be the step for further creative collaboration process in the field of art, fashion, architecture, performance, music and more with the results which build upon what we envisaged.
It was a long and harsh journey to join in this Saturday night fashion event as my car had been broken down and towed away in the rain. However I would regret if I didn’t make it. Thank you for the fashion photographer Kent Johnson who invited me to this beautiful fashion night out and of course the designer Thu Nguyen who created fabulous collections. The fashion label was named after her daughter Elise who was browsing the red garden interior shop like a fairytale princess. The colorful night with beautiful couture and millinery admirers!
