Sydney Biennale 2012 : All our Relations https://www.soyounfotoarts.com/blog/wordpress/2012/07/16/sydney-biennale-2012-all-our-relations/ Mon, 16 Jul 2012 02:30:59 +0000 http://www.soyounfotoarts.com/blog/wordpress/?p=556 I had better describe this year’s Sydney Biennale as less exciting, safe, and familiar. Or I could have been spoiled by a spectacle. There is one work that elicits my exclamation: Hylozoic Series by Philip Beesley. This snow crystal forest was breathing and emitting colourful light of life when I was browsing through the work.

Having a glass of wine over the gorgeous view of Sydney harbour on the top hill of Cockatoo island, I contemplated the theme of the Biennale: All our Relations. Yes, all artworks appear to be knotted through stiches, embroidery and weaving. And what else? There are collaborations and participations in the artworks. However this broad concept of ‘relation’ in arts seems to be ambiguous and subtle to be presented for viewers/participants. With the similiar attempt, the French curator, Nicholas Bourriaud developed the term, ‘Relational Aesthetics’ through the book with the same name (1998) and the exhibition, Traffic (1996). Are we, as audiences, too picky? I need to think further.

Ewa Partum : Installation Metapoetry “A la recherche du temps perdu” according to Marcel Proust
Lyndal Jones ‘ Rehearsing catastrophe : The ark in Sydney’
Nina Canell and Robin Watkins ‘And so entangled in their neighbour’s boughs’
Fujiko Nakaya ‘Living Chasm’
Erin Manning ‘Folds to Infinity’
Cecilia Vicuna ‘Quipu that remembers nothing’
Tiffany Singh ‘Knock on the sky Listen to the sound’

22 July 2010.
The Korean artist, Choi Jeong-Hwa describes his art works as ‘low arts’, ‘elaborated sloppiness’ and ‘dazzling trifles’. This optimistic artist did not bother to re-install his artwork on Cockatoo Island for the Biennale of Sydney 2010 as the original installation at Sydney Opera House is damaged by severe weather.
