Passing the huge polished stainless steel mirror work, Sky Mirror, which is reflecting the sky in front of the building, I entered into the gallery room filled with over size – but smaller than Sky Mirror – art works. While I was playing with my reflection and distortion on the stainless hexahedron, I felt like playing in front of a fun mirror in an amusement park. Also, the slight shift of movement appeared on the surface reminded me Daniel Crooks’s video work with distorted images. When I reached to rectangle shape covered with deep blue pigment, I thought about Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue (IKB). The surface protruded from the white wall radiated indescribable sense when I stood in front of it. That was the moment of detecting a great sensation through the appreciation of the simplicity in unexpected way.
Pulse…the visualization of heart beats into a single flashing bulb in the darkness! What a thrilling and beautiful moment! I was so amazed to see that my flickering heart beats were dissolved away among the crowd of other people’s heart beat lights.
The installation works by the artist, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer speaks about human beings through the electronic engineering. The works connect people: My body shape is overlapped on the previous people’s body impirnts through the electronic heat detection; My voice is overwrapped with the recording of previous people’s voices.
People interact with the works, by drawing, designing and performing. Without the human touch, the artwork would be a mere machine.
