Sydney Festival 2013

I am quite contented with Sydney festival programs which I chose this year.

Eraritjaritjaka : Full of yearning for something that has been lost.

It’s a quite fresh style theatre with; live music that played by Mondriann string quartet from Bach’s Baroque music to Ravel and modern composed piece by the director Heiner Goebbels himself; clever semi-live video that combine live performance with video; and most of all, the one man’s philosophical monologue based on the musings of Nobel laureate, Elias Canetti – I never read his books but I fell in love with them already through this performance by French actor, André Wilms. In this enchanting theatre, I felt empathy, humour, and reminiscence.

Semele Walk: Full of desire for something that can not be possessed.

My eyes were filled with the lavish fashion of Vivienne Westwood and my ears with the beautiful Baroque opera music and songs by George Frideric Handel. The costume and hair style of the musicians were the extra pleasure to look at. The group of choir members scattered among the audience and extended the performers’ space beyond the boundary of stage. Perhaps the reason for no surtitle is to enhence this multi-sensory experience.

Wreck: Full of musical incarnation for something that had been wrecked and deserted.

and…Rian: Full of delightful singing for something that has been forgotten.

I like Irish folklore music and couldn’t pass this performance. This new fusion music and dance had all elements of the reason why I liked about: Indigenous spirituality and most of all, it made me want to dance. The green stage invited me to join in the performers and to be intoxicated with the joy.

Anish Kapoor

I like to start New Year with arts and this time, encountered with Anish Kappor’s works at MCA.

Passing the huge polished stainless steel mirror work, Sky Mirror, which is reflecting the sky in front of the building, I entered into the gallery room filled with over size – but smaller than Sky Mirror – art works. While I was playing with my reflection and distortion on the stainless hexahedron, I felt like playing in front of a fun mirror in an amusement park. Also, the slight shift of movement appeared on the surface reminded me Daniel Crooks’s video work with distorted images. When I reached to rectangle shape covered with deep blue pigment, I thought about Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue (IKB). The surface protruded from the white wall radiated indescribable sense when I stood in front of it. That was the moment of detecting a great sensation through the appreciation of the simplicity in unexpected way.
